Little Sisters of the Poor Penang home for elderly care

The Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Penang was founded in June 1952 at the request of the then Bishop Michael Olcemendy of Malacca.

Messrs Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par (The Tiger Balm Gardens) donated the land for their first foundation.

The current home which was re-opened in October 2009, was rebuilt on the present site at 79, Lorong Batu Lanchang, Penang.

Founded by St Jeanne Jugan and following her Charism, the Little Sisters continue to offer the elderly of nil or minimal income a home away from home.

Volunteers and members of the Association Jeanne Jugan also help the sisters in the services at the home.

The elderly are offered full residential care with facilities as well as medical and dental services.

Besides residential care, the elderly can take part in various activities to keep their days interesting such as outings, picnics, bingo, colouring classes, exercise with music, band practises and even participatory practises for upcoming concerts.

The Home is Financed by Public Charity

Today’s culture challenges us to give ever clearer witness to respect for life at every stage.

As Little Sisters of the Poor at the service of the elderly, their witness is focused on the end of life.

The care of the dying has always been the summit of their apostolate.

They continue to value the tradition of assuring a constant, prayerful presence to who are in the final period of life.

They have the precious mission of helping the older members of their community to turn their later years into time of fulfilment and completion.

St Jeanne Jugan, the foundress, envisioned hospitality as a humble fraternal service uniting in one family, the Little Sisters of the Poor and the elderly and associating them with lay collaborators.

The home is financed by public charity.

The collecting – a legacy of the foundress – opens this door of sharing to all.

They are very grateful for any help received and tax exempt receipts are issued for monetary donations.
